Menopause

Dr. Young Kim, Dr. Regan Choi

Learning the basics:

What is Menopause?

Menopause is a normal part of aging that marks the end of your reproductive years. The reproductive hormones decline when a woman typically reaches her 40s or 50s and in some cases, 30s and 60s.

Menopause is signaled by 12 months since last menstruation where the ovaries stop releasing eggs and stop producing estrogen. More specific details on menopause and any consequences can be obtained at the hospital with tests such as PicoAMH Elisa diagnostic tests, blood tests, thyroid function tests, liver function tests, kidney function tests, and more.

The hormonal changes force the body to adapt to the new environment which produces the common symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats. These symptoms can continue for an average of four to five years, but they decrease in frequency and intensity. Some women reported that their symptoms lasted longer.

After menopause is officially over, a woman is no longer able to produce eggs thus nearly making it impossible to become pregnant naturally.

Stages of Menopause:

Perimenopause:

Symptoms:

Racing heart, headaches, joint and muscle aches/pain, difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, weight gain, hair loss and/or thinning.

This stage can begin 8 to 10 years before menopause when the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen. It usually starts in a woman's 40s but is different by person.

Menopause:

Symptoms:

Hot flashes, night sweats and/or cold flashes, urinary urgency, difficulty sleeping, emotional changes (mood swings, mild depression).

Once you've gone through 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, you've officially reached menopause.

Post Menopause

Hormone levels will remain at a constant low level. You will no longer be able to become pregnant, and you will not experience monthly menstrual cycles.

"Acupuncture for menopausal symptoms is a realistic option for women who cannot or do not wish to use [hormone therapy]" to ease hot flashes, sleep issues or mood swings.

Natalie W: AcuBay Clinic provides excellent highly effective care using both acupuncture and herbs. Dr. Kim and Dr. Choi are highly professional, caring, and very knowledgeable. I saw them for my peri-menopause symptoms which included not being able to sleep, waking up to four to five times during the night, and hot flushes. Also, I had severe fatigue and digestive problems. After a series of acupuncture and herbal medicine from them, I was able to sleep through the night, my hot flushes and fatigue had completely disappeared. My energy levels were high and there was a dramatic improvement in my digestion. I highly recommend AcuBay Clinic for exceptional care with effective results!

After an initial zoom consultation, I was already very relaxing and relieved. AcuBay Clinic is totally COVID-19 secure with full screening, temperature checks, masks, and hand sanitizer.
